About 25 years ago Neil and I began to learn sign language I’m very rusty at it.. but lets have a go.. Does anyone know what I’m saying..? (my name is Yvonne) its sometimes hard to understand other peoples languages or we can get confused when others speak to us.. I was confused when my tutor Robert signed the name he was known as by his friends those who knew him well. can you guess what this name was that he was known by? name was SIGN HIS NAME Well his friends called him 'stinky' because he has a problem with wind.. I was known as kirbdrill at school as my surname was Kirby and it was the time we were all being taught 'the Kirby drill'. Who remembers the kirbdrill.. “Look right look left look all around.. if all is clear quick march !!” Do you have a nick name? If so what is it and why? Nicknames are given because of our characters - Our natures .. In the reading from Matthew Jesus asked the disciples So.. who do people say I am and the disciples have heard so many suppositions of who Jesus is by those around them John the Baptist .. Elijah, Jeremiah or one of the prophets. Then Jesus comes back to his disciples and he says Yeahhh that’s all ok others thinking who I am But what about you …. Who do you say I am? And yes the answer is given in full as Peter declares “you are the Christ, the Messiah, The Son of the Living God..” In making that statement Peter has declared that Jesus is the one the Jewish people have been waiting for the one foretold by the prophets the one who will save the Jewish people.. That question of who do you say I am who is this man the supposition of who he is was asked right up to the death of Jesus And that question is still being asked today. So I suppose my question today is who do you say Jesus is? And if he is to you Jesus Christ, Messiah, Son of the Living God then just like Peter who was given the keys to the kingdom acknowledging Jesus professing Jesus as Lord will make a difference to your life not just a one off difference but a continuing difference day after day…. whatever our age.. There are people today still seeking to know who Jesus is and people discounting who he is.. I love how Nicky Gumble deals with this question in Alpha the course we have just run in the parish. Nicky says there are only three possibilities as to who Jesus is.. Either he was a fraud.. insane or He is the son of God We know that the characteristics of Jesus the actions of Jesus the life, death and resurrection of Jesus tell us he is the Son of God And ask if that's so if we truly believe then what difference does it make to yours and to my life.. ? For me the difference it makes is as far as I can see that just as Simon Peter.. Peter Knew that Jesus was the son on God through first hand evidence And then through his public acknowledgement of Jesus Jesus Who knew full well the character and potential of Peter gave him a new name a nick name The rock On whom I will build by church. So as soon as Peter acknowledges Jesus Jesus acknowledges Peter and not only does he acknowledge Peter “you are the one on whom I will build my Church..” And of course that doesn't mean we all live happily ever after it means Jesus through the Power of His holy Spirit equipped Peter for all he had to face.. and we know that was often traumatic often more difficult than we could ever imagine.. Peter walked on water then sunk through the waves Peter tells Jesus not to follow the path to suffering and death and Jesus tells Peter .. get behind me satan.. And the most famous thing we know of Peter is that he denied Jesus three times as Jesus was crucified.. yet knowing all of these things.. Jesus called Peter called him the rock and as he called him he called him to a purpose to build his church.. And in the same way as we acknowledge Jesus acknowledge Jesus as Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the Living God Jesus will acknowledge you And will equip you equip you with the Holy Spirit to be the disciple you have called been called to be… So my question today is every time we name Jesus as Lord, the Messiah Christ as the son of God do we allow God to name us and tell us the plans he has for us? plans not for our gains but for the purpose of building his church the church which can breathe and speak into the needs, pain and suffering of the world the world abroad and the world here in our communities.. Are you ready to be a disciple called anew to walk with others .. Are you read just as with Peter. to allow yourself to be walked with through the good and the hard times of life. declaring your faith your belief in Jesus as the Messiah.. Christ.. The Son of God.. Amen..
